Transitioning Out Of The Lockdown With Our Children

The world has turned topsy-turvy for all of us during the past six months. No one has remained unaffected due to the global crisis in the form COVID-19.And,hence it’s quite normal to feel anxious and stressed. We have spent a lot of time indoors with restrictions, fear and uncertainty. The media did not make it easy and we have been bombarded with a lot of negative information.

Keeping physical distance has been very tough on most of us, especially  for our children. Now with the lockdown opening in phases it is but quite natural for our children to be worried. It will take time for our children to adjust to the restrictions in the current scenario, but with time man adapts. There is no one-size that fits all solution for emerging out of the lockdown but here are a few ways to help our children:

  • Communicate with your children. Let them know it’s normal to feel worried and anxious. The chances are that some of our kids would fear going out or meeting people and there will be other kids waiting to move out. Ask them what’s going on in their minds. Try to answer their questions. As parents do remember that we may not have answers to all questions.
  • Maintain a routine for your meals ,study and bed time as far as possible.
  • Spend quality time with your children doing fun things together like playing games, painting or reading .
  • Safety rules need to be clearly explained to them . What would amount to responsible behaviour—–maintaining social distance, wearing a mask in public spaces, regularly washing hands. Our kids need to know that safety rules have to be maintained for one self and also for others.
  • Separation anxiety could be faced by younger kids as and when schools physically re-open. Now, is the time that we begin speaking with our kids about going back to the school building and prepare them for the return.
  • Responses of people to meeting us and our children could be varied due to restrictions and precautions that we need to maintain and take. Our children need to know that some people may not be comfortable about meeting nor appear friendly as before. We should let our children know that all the social-distancing happening is well-meaning on the part of everyone.

THE BEST WE CAN DO FOR OUR CHILDREN IS TO ASSURE THEM THAT EVERYTHING WILL GRADUALLY GET BACK TO NORMAL AND THIS TOO SHALL PASS.
