From “What Is?” to “What If?”: The Simple Shift That Can Transform Student Learning

Let’s take a moment to reflect on how we were taught and how we teach today. Ask, “What is evaporation?” and hands shoot up. Students confidently repeat the definition they memorised. Now ask, “Why do wet clothes dry faster on a sunny day?” The room gets quieter. Students begin thinking, discussing, connecting the concept to experience and sometimes even disagreeing. That is where deeper learning begins.
The shift from “What is?” to “Why?” or “What if?” can transform how students engage with learning. Today, education is increasingly moving beyond recall towards applying knowledge, solving problems, thinking critically, and making meaningful connections. And the good news? You don’t need to redesign your entire lesson plan. Sometimes, changing one question is enough.

Why Students Need More Than Memorisation
Most of us have memorised pages of information for an exam, only to forget them later. Students can similarly remember definitions, formulas, and dates but struggle when asked to apply them in unfamiliar situations. In a world where information is readily available, learning is not only about remembering facts. It is about knowing how to use them. Think of learning to ride a bicycle: knowing every part of the bicycle is different from actually riding it. Similarly, students understand concepts more deeply when they use them to solve problems, explain situations, and make decisions.
From Memory-Based to Application-Based Questions

Notice something? The lesson didn’t change. The textbook didn’t change. The curriculum didn’t change. Only the question changed. Yet the learning became richer.
The Magic Lies in the Question
Application-based questions encourage students to:
- Explain
- Predict
- Analyse
- Justify
- Compare
- Create
- Solve problems
Instead of simply searching their memory for an answer, students begin connecting ideas. Try replacing “What is…?” with:
- What would happen if…?
- Why do you think…?
- How would you solve…?
- Can you explain your thinking?
- Where might you use this in real life?
- Can you think of another solution?
These simple prompts can turn a recall exercise into a meaningful discussion.
Start Small, Think Big
Transforming classroom learning doesn’t always require new technology, expensive resources, or lengthy lesson plans. Sometimes, it begins with one question.
One “What is?” becomes a “Why?”
One “Define…” becomes “How would you use…?”
